Temporary Sign Guidelines

Middletown Township has updated its regulations for temporary signs, including, but not limited to, signs related to political elections, the sale and lease of real estate, yard sales, and community or special events. Residents and property owners are encouraged to review the requirements below before placing any temporary signs throughout the Township.

When Can Signs Be Displayed?

Political/Election Signs

Political signs may be posted no earlier than 30 days before an election or referendum. All signs must be removed no later than 10 days after the election or referendum.

Other Temporary Signs

Other temporary signs, such as signs for real estate, yard sales, community events, or special events, are also subject to Township regulations regarding how long they may be displayed.

Sign Size

The maximum size of one temporary sign is 12 square feet.

The maximum total sign area on a single lot is 24 square feet.

Temporary signs cannot be permanently affixed to the ground or a structure.

Where Can Signs Be Placed?

Temporary signs should be placed on private property in compliance with Township size, location, and setback requirements.

Signs should also be placed far enough from the roadway so they do not obstruct the view of motorists or pedestrians or create a safety hazard.

In residential districts, freestanding signs may not exceed 5 feet in height.

Where Temporary Signs May NOT Be Placed

Temporary signs may not be:

• Placed within the public right-of-way
• Located where they obstruct the vision of motorists or pedestrians
• Attached to utility poles
• Attached to street identification signs
• Attached to traffic signs or traffic-control devices
• Attached to streetlight or traffic-signal poles
• Attached to trees or other natural features

Any violations may cause the sign to be removed.
