October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Jump to calendar

October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about domestic violence, support survivors and remind individuals and families that help is available.

Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. Abuse is not always physical. It can also include emotional, verbal, financial and psychological abuse, as well as controlling behaviors that impact a person's safety and well-being.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

Recognizing the signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship is an important step toward prevention and support. Some common warning signs include:

  • Controlling behavior or extreme jealousy

  • Isolation from friends and family

  • Threats, intimidation or constant criticism

  • Financial control or restricting access to money

  • Physical violence or threats of harm

  • Monitoring someone's activities, communications or whereabouts
