Middletown Township Secures State Budget Appropriation for Advanced Warning System on S Flowers Mill Road Bridge with Help from Senator Farry and Representative Hogan
Middletown Township, Bucks County — The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors today expressed sincere gratitude to Senator Frank Farry and State Representative Joe Hogan for their assistance in securing a $200,000 budget appropriation of state funding to design and install an advanced warning system on the S Flowers Mill Road Bridge in Langhorne, PA.
“This bridge has long posed challenges for our community,” said Township Manager, Eden Ratliff. “Time and again, trucks have become stuck beneath it, triggering major traffic accidents, costly repairs, and emergency response activations. The installation of an advanced warning system will offer a non-destructive, real-time warning system and help us maintain safe and fluid travel throughout the township.”
Since February 2024, there have been at least six reported incidents of trucks striking the S Flowers Mill Road bridge. These collisions have caused roadway closures, lengthy traffic delays, and even multi-vehicle accidents. Last spring the bridge was hit twice within hours. While the true number of incidents may be higher, these documented cases highlight the urgency of a permanent solution.
Township Manager Ratliff also extends appreciation to the dedicated first responders and township staff who have repeatedly responded to these incidents and helped mitigate traffic disruptions over the years.
“We wouldn’t be advancing this solution without the collaboration of our internal teams, emergency responders, and the support from Senator Farry and Representative Hogan,” Ratliff added.
Chair of the Board of Supervisors, Mike Ksiazek, said, "We appreciate our state partners for their collaboration in securing this essential funding. This advanced warning system represents a critical step in our long-term strategy to enhance public safety and minimize disruptions on our roadways. Middletown Township is dedicated to proactive solutions that protect residents and support the continued growth and wellbeing of our community.” Ksiazek further noted that it is essential for the Township to partner with our state partners to advance capital projects.
Senator Frank Farry added, “As a lifelong resident in the area and long-time first responder, I have seen firsthand the challenges this bridge creates,” said Farry. “Now as the state senator, when the opportunity arose to secure funding for a safety project, we knew it was important for Middletown. This investment will not only help prevent crashes at the bridge but will also reduce the delays caused when trucks must turn around after discovering they can’t clear it.”
Representative Joe Hogan said, “This funding will help Middletown Township build critical safety infrastructure for this bridge,” said Hogan. “Far too many times have we seen the S Flowers Mill Road bridge be shut down and repaired after a truck struck it. I was proud to work with Sen. Farry to get this support for the project, which will help stop accidents and save Middletown money it has spent on repairs.”
Over the next year, the township looks forward to moving forward with design, permitting, and installation of the advanced warning system to deliver safer roadways and prevent future obstruction-related incidents.
